I couldn't edit the character bio thread due to the topic being locked, so here it goes... Use this for future reference when needing history info about Jaes:
Jaesguamarj lived in an outskirt community that bordered the jungle and plains, not terribly far from the ocean. Humans were a rare sight and the ani-elves were cautious of them though there hadn't been any outbreaks of violence... yet. From the brief encounters though, they were treated as less than human, barely better than the animals.
At a young age when he was in his first week of school there was a commotion from town which ended school prematurely. The small community was being attacked by (mostly) human bandits with a demonic entity leading them. The bandits barged into the school, killed the teacher and grabbed the children, with a kicking and screaming Jaes in tow. The houses were razed and burned, their possessions taken, the men killed, and the women and children captured, bound, and caged to be sent overseas via boat where they could be sold into slave markets. Jaes himself had watched helplessly as his own father was murdered.
Jaes and his mother were reunited again in the slave camp and locked in a cell together. They didn't wait long before a crime lord (male, human who was easily identified by his bald and tattooed head) wished to purchase Jaes' mother, thus the two would have been separated. Despite being beaten by the guards, she would not let go of Jaes, refusing to leave him. He didn't know if the crime lord had compassion or was just irritated with the wait, but he agreed to take him and his mother so long as he worked as hard as the other adults.
When they reached the crime lord's mansion, Jaes and his mother were branded on the arm with the the crime lord's symbol (which doubled as the symbol for his thieves guild). They were put to work doing all the chores and even heavy labour around the mansion. They were forced to live in the barn with the animals and locked in every night. There was one other slave (male, human) who worked with them until the burdens finally killed him months later. Others replaced him, but they never lasted due to rebellion (followed by death) or death from exhaustion.
The crime lord had a daughter (older, around Jaes' age, but half elf) and son (younger and human). Both biologically his but with different mothers (yes, he's a vile, vile man). The daughter learned to hate the slaves and treated them with disrespect, but the son was too young to understand and treated them with tolerance and even left them an occasional book, which they hid in the walls of the barn.
The years rolled by... Jaes had grown in stature and strength from his constant work. The lord's mental health started to spiral downward as his daughter grew to hate her him and later left, never to return. The son grew sick and bed ridden. At Jaes' request, his mother had tried her best to heal the son behind the lord's back. On her last attempt though, she was seen (with the now dead son). It was thought that she was poisoning the son the entire time to spite the lord for her imprisonment. She was dragged outside and beaten near to death. Hearing his mother's screams from his woodcutting duty, he rushed in, ax in hand. The lord had beaten Jaes' mother until she could no longer move and had drawn his greatsword to finish her off. Wasting no time, Jaes swung the ax, only to have it cleaved in two and got a nasty cut across his torso which later made his scar which you now see. Jaes was about to be finished off when he threw the ax head to take the lord by surprise and despite his serious injuries, pounced on the villain (who dropped his sword) and raked his flesh with his claws. He was later thrown off and there was a power struggle for the sword, which Jaes won and used to finish off his crazed master.
Jaes cradled his mother in his arms. She died minutes later.
He didn't even have time to give her a proper burial before he was chased and hunted by various members of the lord's guild. Jaes fled into the city and took shelter in a church. The militia was informed by the priest and intercepted the rouges before they could break in. He was healed and given a scarlet ribbon to hide the mark on his arm. The very same ribbon he wears now.
When he was able, he led the priest to where his mother was. He took the sword (and it's scabbard), made of adamantine and kept it in his possession. They held a private burial for his mother in the church's grave site.
Jaes spent a few days with his priest host and willingly helped with his non-clerical duties. The priest knowing he couldn't keep and protect an escaped slave for long, organized a meeting with Professor Kero of the Institute of Magical Arts. Jaes' tuition and travel fare were provided by the church's donation money.
Jaes later met Professor Kero, who admitted him and continued his adventures at school.
